Duracool can greatly extend the life of EPDM, save up to 30% on energy costs, and solve other problems at the same time.
EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a rubber roofing membrane, usually black, and has been popular for over 40 years. The primary problem is that it is black. It is therefore heat absorbent and thus subject to wide temperature variations. Thus, while the heat is affecting the properties of the material by leaching out certain ingredients and in many cases causing shrinkage, there is a constant expansion and contraction which tends to weaken seams.
Duracool Thermal Control white roof coating will lower the roof surface temperature to within a few degrees of ambient and thus protect the membrane and flashing from heat and UV exposure – greatly extending service life. Also, by lowering the temperature gradient of the roof, a result is lower humidity and vapor drive within the roof system components. Duracool also provides an aesthetic appearance to the roof.
Substantial energy savings can be expected, especially in air conditioned facilities. The black surface can heat up to the 150 – 170° range and this heat radiates into the building. The Duracool surface stays within 2° of ambient – a tremendous difference.
Preventative maintenance and repairs can be made using Duracool and polyester seam tape. Duracool is installed using a special primer to ensure adhesion. Two coats of Duracool I will provide 16 – 20 mils of protection and heat reflectivity which should last well over 12 – 15 years in most environments.
